What “knows” can mean in ChatGPT

The question combines several distinct systems. They have different controls and different retention rules. A change in one should not be read as a deletion from the others.

Saved memories and the Memory summary

Saved memories are details ChatGPT may retain for future conversations, such as a preference, name, or recurring constraint. In the newer experience, the Memory summary is the user-facing collection of personal context. It can draw on past chats, files, connected apps, custom instructions, and saved memories. The summary can help show why an answer was personalized, but OpenAI cautions that memory sources do not necessarily expose every factor used for a response. Memory FAQ

For a single fact, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and delete or edit it in the Memory summary. If the account presents the legacy controls, use Manage memories to remove the saved memory. Reference to chat history

Reference to chat history is separate from a saved memory. When enabled, it permits ChatGPT to use useful information from earlier conversations, including facts that were never deliberately saved as a memory. The current Memory FAQ describes this as Reference chat history in the legacy settings and as part of an improved Memory experience that is rolling out. Labels and availability can therefore vary by plan and client, but the distinction matters: deleting a saved memory alone can leave the original chat available for future reference. Memory FAQ

Turn off Reference chat history in Settings > Personalization if you do not want that past-chat personalization. The FAQ says that the information remembered from past chats is then deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The underlying conversations stay in your history until you delete them. Individual chats and archived chats

Deleting a chat removes it from the account immediately and schedules permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, with the stated de-identification, security, and legal exceptions. Deleting a chat is still not a complete deletion of every fact mentioned in it. It does not remove a saved memory derived from that conversation, and it does not delete files saved to Library. Remove both the saved memory and the original chat for a remembered detail, then separately remove any Library file or other stored source that contains it. Uploaded files, projects, and connected apps

Files uploaded in a conversation can be saved to Library when Library is available for the account or workspace. Chat and Library retention are separate, so deleting the chat does not delete a Library file. Delete the file from Library as well. If a connected app supplied personal information, disconnecting it prevents future access but does not erase information already present in older conversations. Account data and model-improvement choice

Account data is broader than visible chats. It can include account details, usage or log information, files, conversations, and payment information where applicable. A consumer data export is a useful inventory, not a recovery mechanism: it can include chat history and other account data, while already deleted chats cannot be restored. The Improve the model for everyone control is a forward-looking model-improvement choice for consumer ChatGPT. New conversations remain in history but are not used to train ChatGPT after the setting is turned off. Temporary Chat

For future conversations, start a non-personalized Temporary Chat. It does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins, does not create new memories, and stays out of chat history unless you save it. If you choose a personalized Temporary Chat, it can use existing memories or custom instructions, although it does not create or update memories while temporary. A Temporary Chat is not zero retention: OpenAI may retain it for up to 30 days for safety purposes, and data sent through an action to a third party follows that recipient’s policy. Choose the deletion scope

The table is deliberately conservative. For one fact, the right answer is usually a set of deletions, because the same fact can reside in several places. For an entire account, account deletion is the broadest consumer control, but it does not override legally permitted or required retention and it cannot restore the account afterward. deleting a ChatGPT account

A practical cleanup sequence

1. Preserve what you need first. Request a data export before deleting anything you may later need for records, tax, employment, or a dispute. Keep the downloaded archive secure because it may contain sensitive account data. The export can take up to seven days and its download link expires after 24 hours. export guide

2. Turn off future uses while you clean. In Settings, turn off Improve the model for everyone. In Personalization, turn off Reference chat history and, if appropriate, saved memories. 3. Remove personal context. In the Memory summary or Manage memories, delete the facts you no longer want used. Check custom instructions, which are another personalization source. For a fact that matters, write down the phrases, names, and documents likely to contain it before you start deleting. Memory FAQ

4. Delete the source material. Delete the relevant chats and any archived chats. Remove matching files from Library. If the material is in a project or custom GPT, delete the relevant project or GPT when that is the required scope. 5. Use a safer default going forward. Start non-personalized Temporary Chats for discussions that should not populate history or memory. Do not save them if that goal still applies. 6. Escalate only if the scope requires it. Delete the consumer account when you no longer need the service and want the broad account-removal path. If you need to access, correct, delete, or object to processing of personal data beyond the self-service options, submit the appropriate Privacy Portal request. Example of removing one fact

Hypothetical example. A user told ChatGPT their home address in a chat, asked it to remember the address for local recommendations, and uploaded a document containing the address. They want that address no longer used for personalization.

First, they delete the address from the Memory summary or Manage memories. Next, they delete the original chat, including any archived copy, and remove the document from Library. If it was in a project or custom GPT, they remove it there too. They then turn off Reference chat history if they want to stop ChatGPT from drawing new personal context from other retained conversations. Consumer and managed workspaces are different

This guide is primarily for a personal consumer workspace such as Free, Plus, or Pro. ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces can have organization-managed retention, access, deletion, export, and data-sharing controls. A workspace administrator may be able to access, export, audit, retain, delete, or set policies for prompts, files, outputs, and activity metadata. For business products, OpenAI says inputs and outputs are not used for training by default, including ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the API Platform. That default does not make a personal cleanup control unnecessary. The organization can configure retention and has its own legal, security, and employment obligations. Limits and common mistakes

• Do not confuse hiding with deletion. Archiving removes a chat from the sidebar, not from the account.

• Do not confuse opt-out with erasure. The model-improvement control governs future use of new consumer conversations, while chats, memories, and files have their own deletion controls.

• Do not delete only the chat for a remembered fact. Remove the saved memory and every source that contains the fact.

• Do not delete only the memory for a sensitive document. Remove the file from Library or from the project or custom GPT that retained it.

• Do not treat Temporary Chat as a legal-retention guarantee. It is designed not to appear in history or create memory, but it may be retained for up to 30 days for safety, and third-party actions have separate retention.

• Do not use an in-chat response as an audit. ChatGPT can summarize user-visible settings and content, but it cannot inspect all backend records, retention exceptions, model-training datasets, or third-party systems on your behalf.
