Start with free access and pay when a recurring task runs into a limit or clearly benefits from a paid feature. One useful planning example is a $20 monthly allowance for a primary assistant, adjusted to your finances and local prices. It is a budget choice, not a minimum required to use AI well.
Add a second subscription only for a distinct need the first does not meet, such as a particular coding integration or regular video production. Compare the complete cost, including API charges, credits, taxes, and renewal terms, and check whether work or school already provides suitable access.
Try a plan for a month before making a long commitment. Record what you used, what improved, and whether the benefit justified the bill. Keep, downgrade, or cancel on that evidence. The dated examples below help compare plan types; check the official offer and checkout before buying.
Start with needs not brands
An AI subscription is best thought of as capacity to perform a job, not as membership in a model family. List the two or three recurring jobs where you believe AI can help. For each one, record the input, the required output, how often it occurs, what an acceptable result looks like, and what happens when the tool is unavailable. This turns a vague desire for access to the latest model into an auditable purchase decision.
For example, "help me think through occasional travel plans" probably fits a free general assistant. "Review pull requests inside my editor every workday" may justify a coding product. - Frequency: Does the task occur at least weekly, or is this a one-off project?

Check for overlap before combining plans. A general assistant and a coding assistant may overlap substantially, especially if the general plan already includes a capable coding workflow. Pay for both only after testing the same real tasks and identifying a recurring advantage that matters in your workflow, such as editor integration, repository permissions, or dependable high-volume capacity.
Free does not mean useless. Current free offerings can cover routine chat, light file work, basic coding, and occasional image tasks, but they generally restrict model choice, high-cost tools, rate, context, or availability. These are planning ranges, not claims about what people "normally" spend. A student with free institutional access may spend nothing; a filmmaker may devote most of the budget to credits rather than chat; a developer running production automation may spend more through APIs than subscriptions. The decision rule is that each line should have a separate job and an upper spending bound.

Subscription or API usage

Privacy, data controls, and the team boundary
Do not treat a personal paid plan as a security upgrade by default. Hidden costs to put in the budget
The advertised monthly price is often the smallest visible part of an AI bill. Include these items in the envelope:

Set a recurring 15-minute audit near each renewal date. Open the billing page for every provider and record the actual charge, including tax, credits, and overages. Then answer the following questions honestly:
- Which specific jobs did this plan complete in the last 30 days?
- What was the measurable benefit: minutes saved, fewer revisions, faster delivery, money earned, or a risk avoided?
- Which one of those jobs could a current free tier, existing plan, or capped API call handle well enough?
- Did I hit a real limit more than once, and did it interrupt valuable work?
- Did I use or need the plan's data controls, integrations, files, or model choice?
- What will renew next month if I do nothing?
Keep a plan only when it has a named recurring job, measurable value, and no cheaper adequate substitute. Pause or cancel it when it has had no measured value for a month, it duplicates another active plan, or it was bought for a temporary project that ended. Cancel at least a few days before the renewal date, confirm the downgrade date, export needed work, and check that any API auto-recharge or usage-based billing is also off.
